IMEI not recognized Samsung J7

I have swapped my device to a hand me down Virgin Mobile Samsung J7. The activation seemed to go through ok but I am unable to make or receive phone calls. When I enter the IMEI to check on the activation it now tells me it is not recognized even through it went through fine during the actual activation and my account shows the J7 as my current device.
