Calling over WiFi

I am looking into getting Virgin Mobile as a carrier, my house doesn't seem to get good reception indoors.  I was wondering if you have WiFi Calling option or App.  I haven't had a cell phone in 10 years due to not having good coverage inside my house.

I couldn't find any information on this and the phone is Andriod 6.01 so I'm sure it would support it.  But not sure which networks support it.

Re: Calling over WiFi

Hey there @Crazyd! This is a great question and I agree, it was pretty tough to find an answer so I apologize for that. Unfortunately, VM does not offer calling over wifi because it is a prepaid phone service. Due to wifi calling being a "free service", it would conflict with the prepaid service agreement of paying as you go. VOIP (Voice over IP) services essentially forgo mobile networks altogether by providing another option to call and text without using a mobile network. There are some providers that offer wifi calling but I don't believe any of them are prepaid services. They are more than likely postpaid (contract) services. I hope this helps. Let me know if you have any other questions! Thanks!

Regards,

Steve

Re: Calling over WiFi

I've had an htc Desire 816 on Virgin since 2014, and it has done wifi calling from the beginning. I can confirm it by calling my landline at home with the data switched off, and it works every time. Far better than trying to use data. I get only one bar and I'm 17 miles from downtown Chicago!

Re: Calling over WiFi

Actually I believe it is up to the service provider. All the T-Mobile mvno's have wifi calling. That is the reason I switched to metro Pcs. That and being able to use the data while on a call.

Re: Calling over WiFi

MY VM service is not "PrePaid", it is a plan based service, still, no wifi calling.

Steve, even if it were "prepaid" your answer makes little sense.  The minutes can be billed as well.

whatever, VM is lame, as usual.

After my free year is over, i'll move along.

Re: Calling over WiFi

Exactly. @GreenSeaSerpent

So since those minutes are being billed, they are being used. Wifi calling allows a network to search for towers to use to make those calls. Those minutes are still being used when its regarding prepaid. People use wifi calling so they wont have to use their own data. Thats not possible with prepaid. You will be using data to use your network to make your calls. Post paid doesnt operate the same.  You cant use a mobile service as a brigde to make calls over wifi and not expect to pay OR use data from the starting point.

Re: Calling over WiFi

It sure would have been nice for Virgin to have been upfront and honest about describing their service offerings (and lack thereof) before I made the purchase.
