Trying to Unlock my iPhone that I purchased from Apple

I have an iPhone 7 Plus that was purchased directly from Apple almost 2 years ago now.  Last August I activated the device on Virgin Mobile after being on AT&T and Verizon before that with this device.  I recently got a new device and moved to a different carrier, but I gave the device to a family member who is using Sprint and was informed that the device was 'Locked' to Virgin Mobile.

How do I go about unlocking this device?  I have talked to multiple Virgin Mobile representatives who have all told me that they can't unlock the device because I was not with Virgin Mobile for at least a year.  This is unacceptable as I purchased the device outright and unlocked from Apple directly and I have the receipt to proove it.   I need Virgin Mobile to unlock my rightfully owned property.
